I’m a political journalist and writer. I’ve contributed to Al Jazeera, VICE, the New Statesman, The Herald, The Scotsman, the Scottish Review of Books, and lots of other publications. The articles featured on this site – commentary, essays, reviews, profiles, and reports – represent a sample of my work since 2013.
I also edit books, in recent years: Arguing For Independence and The Case For Leftwing Nationalism by my late dad Stephen Maxwell, and (with Pete Ramand) Old Nations, Auld Enemies, New Times by Tom Nairn.
I grew up in Edinburgh and studied in Glasgow (politics) and London (journalism), before spending some time in Belfast. I left the UK – because it’s awful – in 2017. I now live in Vancouver, BC, which is much nicer.
